KINDri: Skin Types
Skin Types
The skin care industry made up 39% of the global cosmetic market in 2018 and is expected to be worth $135 billion by 2021! It’s easy to understand why there are so many skin care products on the market - moisturizers, cleansers, beauty oils, anti-aging creams, sunscreen, face masks, toners, makeup, and gazillions of other products that are specifically made for your skin. To make it more confusing, you may have noticed that they are often tailored towards different skin types.
Walking into a cosmetics shop and staring at the sheer amount of choices can be pretty overwhelming. How the heck do you know which skin type you fit into and ultimately which product you need?
Have no fear - KINDri is here to help you work it out! Let’s start by discussing the different types of skin...
How Many Skin Types Are There?
Environmental factors and your daily routines can strongly influence your skin’s condition, but overall, your skin type is determined by genetics. Whilst your skin is unique, depending on which skin type you fall into, there will be different guidelines you can follow to ensure it’s kept in its optimal state.
There are 5 main skin types:
Dry Skin Type
Characterized by tightness, scaly patches, itchiness, and flaky skin. Your skin will likely have tiny pores, which under-produce a natural oil known as sebum. Dry skin is often sensitive to the environment and you will have to be careful which beauty products you use. Watch out for premature skin-aging!
Oily Skin Type
An oily skin type can be identified by a shiny appearance, which is due to the over-production of sebum. Your skin will have larger pores than most, which can become clogged and lead to acne outbreaks. Whilst acne can occur with any skin type, those with oily skin are more prone. Your chances of developing premature wrinkles are much lower though!
Combination Skin Type
Having a mix of oily and dry patches is typical of a combination skin type. Your pores will range from small, normal, to large and will produce differing amounts of sebum oil all over your face, creating a variety of problem areas. This may sound difficult to manage, but there’s hope for you yet! Read on for some great advice on how to deal with combination skin.
Normal Skin Type
If you have normal skin, then count yourself lucky as you’ll have much lower maintenance requirements. Your pore size will most likely be small and unnoticeable, but large enough to produce adequate sebum oil to keep your skin from drying out. However, that doesn’t mean your skin is perfect! Problems you might face include redness, aging, or dullness and you still need to protect yourself from environmental factors, such as pollution.
Sensitive/Acne-Prone/Problematic/Mature
These are technically not skin types. Instead, they are additional conditions that can occur with any complexion - oily, dry, combination, or normal. For more advice on how to choose the best products for these, keep an eye out for future blog posts!
What Skin Type Do I Have?
Take our quick test to work out which skin type you have:
-Remove any makeup
-Wash face and use a gentle cleanser to softly massage your face
-Rinse your face with warm water, taking care to remove all of the cleanser
-Gently pat your face dry with a clean towel
-Wait for at least one hour - don’t use any products and avoid touching your face during this time
Examine your skin and then answer these questions:
1. Apply a tissue to your T-zone - has it absorbed any oil?
2. Does your skin feel tight? Is it itchy and dry in places? Do you have any red patches or a rash?

What Are The Dos And Don'ts For Each Skin Type?
Oily Skin Type
If you answered yes to “1.” and no to “2.”, then you most likely have an oily skin type. Your skin will usually be cleaner and less shiny after washing and cleansing, but the shine will start to return the longer you leave it. It’s important to exfoliate and clean your face frequently. You should try to avoid heavy creams that will clog up your pores. However, we do not recommend using products that strip the moisture and oils from your skin! This will only serve to make things worse, by stimulating your skin cells to produce more sebum oil. Instead, focus on products with quick absorption rates that will soothe and calm inflammation.
Dry Skin Type
If you answered no to “1.” and yes to any of “2.”, then your skin type is dry. The washing and cleansing can dehydrate your skin and leave it feeling taut. You should choose products that prevent your natural oils from escaping and add much-needed moisture to your skin.
Beauty oils, such as the prickly pear cactus oil and apple stem cell oil, can help give you an extra boost of hydration. Avoid harsh products, especially those that contain alcohol or chemicals, because these will dry out your skin. Washing your skin can promote dryness, so try to wash less frequently and use a gentle cleanser.
Normal Skin Type
If you answered no to both “1.” and “2.”...you lucky bunny! You’ve got normal skin! That means you can use products for every skin type. Be aware that your skin could change over time and ensure that you treat skin problems as they come. Just don’t forget that keeping your skin clean and moisturized will prevent any issues in the future.
Combination Skin Type
If you answered yes to both “1.” and “2.” and you notice signs of oily, dry, and/or normal skin, then it is likely that you have a combination skin type. Don’t worry, this is not the end of the world! *Newsflash* you can use skin products for different skin types on different areas of your skin! OR you could just use
